The Field Guide to Alien Beings

The U.S. government now treats Unidentified Anomalous Phenomena (UAP) as real, physical objects. The June 2021 ODNI Preliminary Assessment logged 144 UAP cases, of which 143 were left unexplained and exactly one was identified (a balloon). Congressional hearings followed in 2023, and the Pentagon stood up a dedicated office, the All-domain Anomaly Resolution Office (AARO), to run the problem down. Something is in the sky, and the record now says so officially.

Here is the ceiling on all of it. As of 2026, no extraterrestrial origin for any UAP has been scientifically confirmed. No alien body and no alien craft has been publicly verified. That is the mainstream scientific consensus, and it holds even though the UAP themselves are now acknowledged as real physical phenomena by the governments of the United States, the United Kingdom, France, and Brazil, among others. Real objects, unknown origin: keep those two facts in separate hands.

On July 26, 2023, David Grusch, a former U.S. Air Force intelligence officer, testified under oath before the House Oversight Committee that the United States possesses craft of non-human origin and has recovered biologics from crash sites. This is sworn testimony from a credentialed source. It is also, to date, independently unverified, and AARO states plainly that it has found no evidence to corroborate it.

Grusch went further: he testified that Washington has run UAP retrieval programs since the 1940s and that multiple countries are quietly competing over recovered craft. Other whistleblowers have corroborated elements of his account, and the claims are under formal investigation by the Intelligence Community Inspector General. Corroborated in parts, proven in none.

And here is the counterweight, published by the government itself. AARO's Historical Report Volume 1 (February 2024) concluded it found 'no evidence' that any U.S. program has ever possessed reverse-engineered extraterrestrial technology, a finding that directly contradicts the whistleblower claims made the same year. Read Grusch and read AARO together, or you have not honestly read either.

The Grey is the one everyone pictures: 3 to 7 feet tall, smooth grey or bluish skin, an oversized bulbous head, enormous black almond eyes, a vestigial mouth, and communication by telepathy. It is the most consistently reported alien type in the world, appearing in roughly 43% of close-encounter (CE-III and CE-IV) reports in Bullard's survey data. The archetype was set by the Betty and Barney Hill abduction case of 1961, building on Kenneth Arnold's famous 1947 sighting, and it has barely changed since.

The Nordic or Pleiadian is the Grey's opposite: tall (6 to 7 feet and up), pale, blonde, blue-eyed, and described as benevolent, usually arriving to warn humanity about itself. The type traces to George Adamski's 1952 to 1953 contactee claims of meeting 'Venusian' beings, with the alleged home later moved to the Pleiades star cluster or the constellation Lyra. Nordics dominate European contactee accounts and are notably rarer in American abduction reports, a tell that culture, not the cosmos, may be doing some of the casting.

The Mantis or insectoid being, 6 to 9 feet tall with a triangular head and large compound eyes, turns up in a smaller slice of the record, around 5 to 10% of abduction reports. Witnesses almost always place it in the same role: calm, analytical, and supervisory, standing over the Grey-type workers like a manager on a factory floor.

One recurring figure refuses the tidy categories. Mothman, a large winged humanoid with glowing red eyes, was reported by multiple witnesses in Point Pleasant, West Virginia, across 1966 and 1967. It sits somewhere between alien, cryptid, and omen, and it is a reminder that this field guide has margins where the entries stop behaving.

In Zulu oral tradition, recorded by Credo Mutwa, the Mantindane are small, grey-skinned beings tied to abductions. It is a traditional account (the source document rates it Tier 5, mythological, on its own five-tier scale), and it is one of the most frequently cited old-world parallels to the modern Grey report. A cultural echo, held at the level of folklore.

In Hindu and Vedic tradition, across the Mahabharata and the Puranas, the Nagas are serpent-bodied, shapeshifting beings who live in the underground realm of Patala and guard knowledge and royalty. The texts verifiably exist, which certifies the story, not the creature. Cited as the deep-antiquity parallel to modern 'reptilian' reports, the Naga is a traditional and mythological figure, and we hold it at exactly that level.

In Dogon tradition in Mali, the Nommo are amphibious teacher-beings said to have come from the Sirius star system and to have handed the Dogon their astronomy. This is the seed of the modern Sirian category, popularized by Robert Temple's 1976 book The Sirius Mystery, which argued the Dogon held advanced knowledge of the Sirius B system. The catch is methodological: the underlying fieldwork (from ethnographer Marcel Griaule) has since been challenged as possibly reflecting cultural contamination from European missionaries rather than ancient contact. A striking story built on a shaky floor.

The Reptilian or Draco being (6 to 8 feet and taller, green or dark scaled skin, vertically slitted eyes, described as authoritarian and hierarchical) was popularized above all by David Icke's 1999 book The Biggest Secret, which claims shapeshifting reptilians secretly control the Earth. There is no credible evidence for any of it. And here is the part not to soften: the broader reptilian-shapeshifter narrative has documented antisemitic structural roots, recycling old secret-cabal tropes in a science-fiction skin. We record it as a reported type and refuse the conspiracy bolted onto it.

The Lyrans, said to be humanity's genetic ancestors from the Lyra and Vega systems, come out of the Billy Meier contactee cases (1975 onward) and Lyssa Royal Holt's channeling material. Meier's supporting photographs, the evidentiary heart of the case, are widely regarded as hoaxes.

A final cluster of pop-culture entries rounds out the shelf: the Blue Avians, blue bird-beings introduced by Corey Goode in 2015; the Ebens, Zeta Reticuli beings from the anonymous 2005 Project Serpo claim; and the Andromedans, tall blue humanoids from Alex Collier's 1990s contactee accounts. Every one of them rests on single-source or channeled testimony with nothing to corroborate it.

In 2023, the Mexican researcher Jaime Maussan presented purported 'alien mummies' to Mexico's Congress. Multiple independent researchers then analyzed the specimens and found them assembled from human and animal bones, with no novel DNA: a confirmed hoax or misidentification, not a non-human biologic. This is the recurring ending. Every time a physical specimen finally meets peer review, it dissolves.

And yet the door is not closed. The 1961 Drake Equation, combined with more than 4,000 confirmed exoplanets, makes intelligent life elsewhere statistically plausible (one conservative estimate lands at 0 to 36 communicating civilizations in our galaxy). Yet SETI has detected no confirmed artificial signal in more than 60 years of listening, and the Fermi Paradox, the plain question 'where is everybody?', remains formally unresolved. The math says company is likely. The silence says otherwise. That gap is the honest center of the whole subject.
